Jack The Ripper In August 1888, the first of a serial of murders was committed by a killer who became known as Jack the Ripper. To this day the identity of the killer remains a mystery. Five women were brutally killed in the East End of London, by a maniac who appeared to kill without warning and with no remorse. 1)What can you learn from Source A? Source A tells us that the two murders were aimed directly at the poorest people in East End at the time, and usually because of the poverty at that time, the women had to revert to prostitution so this tells us that the murderer had a great dislike for poor people or mainly prostitutes, but there was no clear motive for him to do it. It as well tells us that these two murders had been done with an extra amount of effort, which later becomes his signature way of murdering, so that this informs us that the killer may not have had a motive, but he knew what he was doing, so he wasnt totally insane. 2)Does S ource C support the evidence of Sources A and B? Sources B and C strongly support each other, while source A differs a little. Source B is the Coroners report on the death of Polly Nicholls. In this, it says No unskilled person could have known where to find the organs, or to have recognized them when they were found. No mere slaughterer of animals could have carried out these operations and in Source C the report describes how Elizabeth Stride was killed and it shows that is was done in a professional way, taking care in all the way s that she was laid out to be found and the slice across the throat cutting the windpipe completely in two They agree with each other becau... ...them on wild jack chase. The detective methods were besides slowly evolving, so no fingerprints, DNA tests or anything could be used as they were all in the early stages of their development. There were also differences in opinion. For example Mary Kelly- Dr. Bond though her ti me of death was between 100 AM and 200 AM, and Dr. Phillips thought that is was between 500 AM and 600AM. This didnt help the police with the evidence of the witnesses either. The primitive ways of the police and the fact that the Metropolitan Police didnt get along with the City of London police, they were un-cooperative so this slowed down things even further. When the first victim was killed, the commissioner of the Metropolitan police was out of the country, so the officers were left to figure things out for themselves whit no guidance.

Life during the Civil struggle was not a pleasant time. There was basically utter chaos going on the South. Soldiers had to traverse with the harsh conditions and the thought of death. Plantation owners had to worry about who was going to work their fields. Business owners had to worry about who was going to buy their products. Citizens had to worry about passs destroying their property. And the political relation had to worry about how to pay the soldiers and how to end the war. This was a very rough time to be alive. Soldier Life During The Civil War The camp feeling for a soldier was hardly one to be desired. The weather was hot and the water was bad, yet the men kept in good spirits, and there was no grumbling at the hard drill and harder work(Ratchford, 11). The weather varied a lot during the Civil War. At times it would snow up to depths of eight inches and sometimes it would rain and hail for hours on end(Russell, 130). Other times it would be very hot. S ometimes when it would rain, soldiers would wake up half submerged(Brown,122). Death was also a major fear during the Civil War. We cook and eat, talk and laugh with the enemies dead lying all about us as though they were so many logs(Brown, 115). The soldier would march threw battlefields where dead men, horses, and smashed artillery were scattered about in utter confusion the Blue and the Gray mixed-their bodies so bloated, distorted, and discolored from decomposition, that they were basically unrecognizable(Mohr, 326). There was also the duties of the officers. Often when a detachment was on scout, there were no men left in camp to release the pickets, and they had to remain on post for 72 hours at a stretch(Histor... ...g, and killing(Ratchford, 11). To me it sounds as though the life of a soldier during the Civil War is not one that I would want to live. I would preferably sit at my computer and type a paper about it than actually leave through it. The soldiers and the civ ilians alike, had it very rough. The conditions were harsh and the fear of death would be the only thing on my mind. Or fear of having my house burnt down or taken from me is something I would not want to experience.
